How to Check Coolant Levels

Coolant Car Check

Your vehicle’s coolant is responsible for keeping the engine from overheating and other important functions while driving around Edina. Knowing how to check coolant levels is crucial to keeping an eye on the condition of your coolant, so you know whether it needs to be refilled, changed, or serviced in any other way. Learn how to check coolant levels with the service center at Morrie's Golden Valley Cadillac, and give our service center a visit if your Cadillac coolant needs to be changed.

What Is Coolant?

Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and regulates the temperature of your vehicle’s engine components. Inside coolant liquid, there’s an additive that keeps it from freezing below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This additive also keeps the coolant from overheating above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Now that you know what coolant is, let’s take a look at what to look for and other important things to know regarding your coolant.

How to Check Your Coolant Levels & What to Look For

On your coolant reservoir, you’ll find a marking system. If you see that the liquid is at the “Full” marking line, then your vehicle has an adequate amount of coolant. If the fluid level is below this marking, then you’ll need to remove the radiator cap and add more coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Be sure to read the bottle before you pour in the coolant to make sure that it’s premixed. Be careful when adding coolant as you want to make sure that your vehicle’s engine has cooled down. Opening your radiator cap while your engine is hot can be dangerous, and you should never do that.

When to Change Your Vehicle’s Coolant

Your vehicle’s fluid levels will naturally decrease the more you drive on the Minnetonka roads. A good rule of thumb is to check your coolant system every three to six months. In most vehicles, the coolant should be blue, green, yellow, or red. If your Cadillac coolant has a brownish color or almost no color at all, then you’ll want to have the cooling system flushed, so you can replace the coolant.

When to Have Your Vehicle Serviced

The texture of the coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water. If, when checking your coolant levels, you notice that your coolant has a sludgy appearance, schedule service with Morrie's Golden Valley Cadillac immediately. This could be an indication that your vehicle has an internal gasket leak or something more severe. While you are able to drive through Minneapolis with your coolant in this state, we would advise against that. Doing so could risk your engine overheating, which can lead to serious issues later on down the line.
