Steps to Selling Your Car in Minneapolis, MN

Whether you live in Edina or Minnetonka you’re looking for an efficient way to sell your current vehicle. Selling your car on the private market comes with many benefits, but there are some steps you need to follow to ensure the process is done right and that the documentation is legally binding. We’ve broken down the process into seven easy steps for your convenience. Learn how to sell your car in Minneapolis, MN below:

  • Organize Your Documents: Locate your vehicle’s title, owner’s manual, maintenance records if available, vehicle registration, and any other documents related to your car. If applicable, sellers must provide a signed lien release card or notarized lien release form. Don’t forget a copy of your offer from Morrie’s.
  • Other Required Items: Valid government-issued photo identification and all keys and remotes.
  • Present Odometer Readings & Damage Disclosure: Currently, any vehicle 2011 or newer must have an odometer disclosure form. In 2023, cars up to 20 years old will require an odometer disclosure form. Minnesota provides an Application for Corrected Title and Odometer Disclosure Statement on its website.
  • Allow the Buyer to Have the Car Inspected: Most potential buyers will want to have the vehicle inspected by a licensed mechanic before the transaction. Typically the buyer pays their trusted mechanic for this service, but the two parties must agree on when and where the inspection will take place.
  • Bill of Sale: While a Bill of Sale is optional in Minnesota, many buyers and sellers prefer to create one for additional protection and peace of mind. A Bill of Sale should include the following: year, make, and model of the vehicle; vehicle identification number (VIN); date of sale; sale price; odometer reading; printed legal name and address of the seller and buyer; signature of seller and buyer. Instead of a Bill of Sale, the buyer and the seller can submit an Application to Title and Register a Motor Vehicle (PS2000).
  • Transfer the Title and Report the Sale:Transfer the vehicle ownership title to any of the deputy registrar offices throughout Minnesota. If there is an issue with the vehicle’s title, you’ll need to fill out and submit an Application for Duplicate Title or Registration (PS2067A) and pay any related fees before the sale. Additionally, private sales in Minnesota require the following information: all sellers listed on the title must print and sign; sale price; date of sale; odometer disclosure (required for all vehicles less than 10 years old); damage disclosure (required for all vehicles less than six years old); buyer(s) provide printed legal name, date of birth and signature
  • Don’t remove Your License Plates & Registration Sticker: Unless your plates are specialized or personalized, do not remove your license plates – in Minnesota, the license plate, registration, and taxes are transferred to the buyer. The vehicle title transfer, however, must be reported within 10 days after the sale either online or a Record of Sale stub can be completed and mailed to a Driver and Vehicle Services office
